James Kenneth Hahn is an American lawyer and politician. A Democrat, Hahn was elected 40th mayor of Los Angeles in 2001. He served until 2005, when he was defeated in his bid for re-election. Prior to his tenure as mayor, Hahn held a number of other positions for the city of Los Angeles, including deputy municipal attorney, city comptroller, and city attorney. Hahn was the only person in the city's history to be elected to three of the city's offices. He is currently a judge at the Los Angeles County Superior Court. As mayor, Hahn appointed Bill Bratton, former NYPD commissioner, as Sheriff of Los Angeles and decided not to renew Bernard Parks' second term as sheriff. Bratton's appointment is widely believed to reduce the crime rate in Los Angeles and improve morale within the department. Hahn also successfully spearheaded the campaign to defeat the secession in the San Fernando Valley, Hollywood and San Pedro, thus keeping Los Angeles intact.
