John Cornelius Stennis is an American politician who served as a US Senator from the State of Mississippi. He is a Democrat who has served in the Senate for more than 41 years, becoming the longest in office in the past eight years. He retired from the Senate in 1989 and is thus far the last Democrat to hold the position of US Senator from Mississippi. Additionally, at the time of retirement, Stennis was the last US Senator to serve during Harry Truman's presidency. While attending law school, Stennis won a seat in the Mississippi House of Representatives, serving between 1928 and 1932. After serving as state prosecutor and judge, Stennis won a special election. to fill vacant seats in the US Senate following Theodore's death. G. Bilbo. He won full term in 1952 and remained in the Senate until he refused to run for reelection in 1988.
