Major General Lachlan Macquarie, CB is a British Army officer and colonial manager from Scotland. Macquarie was the fifth and last autocratic governor of New South Wales from 1810 to 1821 and was credited with the colonial's social, economic and architectural development. He is considered by historians to be a key influence on New South Wales' transition from a criminal colony to a free colony and thus played an important role in shaping the commune.
