Mary Ann Shadd Cary is an anti-slavery activist, journalist, editor, teacher, and Canadian American lawyer. She was the first black woman in North America and the first woman in Canada. She was also the first black woman to attend law school in America. Mary Shadd edited The Province Freeman, founded in 1853. Published weekly in southern Ontario, it advocates equality, inclusion and self-education for blacks in Canada and the United States. Mary's family joined the Underground Railroad to help those who fled slavery. After the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, his family moved to Canada. She returned to the United States during the American Civil War, where she recruited soldiers for the Union.
