He was honored as the man who scored 2 goals against England for Malaysia on 12 June 1991, the only Malaysian to do so. He has a younger brother, Zainizam Marjan, who has also played for Sabah FA and Malaysia. Matlan is a Sabahan Bajau from Kota Belud, Sabah. He started his professional career playing at the Pres President Cup. He made his M-League debut in the 1989 season, scoring 5 goals. In 1990, he scored 8 of the 16 goals of Sabah FA. In 1991, Matlan was called up to the national team for the first time in a friendly match against Aston Villa. On June 12, 1991, he made his international debut against England, marking Toni Fritsch's 35-year record as the last new side to score twice against England.
