In 2004, Cerveris won the Tony Award for Best Actor in the Assassin Musical as John Wilkes Booth. In 2015, he won his second Tony Award for Best Actor in the Musical for the House of Fun as Bruce Bechdel. He has been called "the most versatile top man on Broadway" by Playbill.com, playing roles ranging from "Shakespeare's Romeo to The Who's Tommy, to German transgender rock diva Hedwig in Hedwig and Angry Inch as Sweeney Todd's murderous title character in Sondheim. ”Cerveris' most watched TV role to date was the September codenamed Observer in the sci-fi television series FOX Fringe
