Oliver Laurence North is an American political commentator, television presenter, military historian, author, and retired U.S. Marine Lieutenant Colonel. A veteran of the Vietnam War, North was a member of the National Security Council during the Iran-Contra incident, a political scandal in the late 1980s. It involved the illegal sale of weapons to the regime. Khomeini of the Islamic Republic of Iran to encourage the release of American hostages was subsequently detained in Lebanon. North gives details of Part 2 of the plan, which involves transferring the proceeds from arms sales to support Contra rebel groups in Nicaragua, which were specifically banned under the Boland Amendment. North is exempt from limited prosecution in exchange for a hearing in Congress on the plan. He was initially convicted of three counts, but the sentences were overturned and quashed and all charges against him were dismissed in 1991
