Thomas Richard Harkin is an American politician, lawyer, and author who served as United States Senator from Iowa from 1985 to 2015. As a Democrat, he was previously United States Representative for Iowa's 5th Congressional District of 1975 to 1985. Born in Cumming, Iowa, Harkin graduated from Iowa State University and American Catholic University's Columbus Law School. He served in the US Navy as an operational jet pilot. After serving as an assistant to Congress for several years, he ran two elections for the United States House of Representatives, lost in 1972 but won in 1974. He went on to serve five terms in the House of Representatives. Harkin won the race for the US Senate in 1984 by a wide margin. He was at the forefront of his party's presidential election in 1992, but dropped out in favor of eventual winner Bill Clinton.
