Pope John Paul I was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of Vatican City from August 26, 1978 until his death 33 days later. He was the first pope to be born in the 20th century. His reign was one of the shortest in papal history, leading to the most recent year with three pontiffs and the first since 1605. John Paul I remains the most recent born in Italy pope, the last successor of these pontiffs from Clement VII in 1523. His successor, John Paul II, declared him the servant of God on November 23, 2003, the first step on the path to holiness. Pope Francis confirmed his heroic virtue on November 8, 2017 and named him venerable. Before the pope's conclave elected him, he expressed a wish not to be elected, telling his relatives that he would refuse the pope if elected, but when the cardinals elected him, he felt he was supposed to say yes.
