William Averell Harriman, better known as Averell Harriman, is a politician, businessman and diplomat with the American Democratic Party. The son of the railroad baron E. H. Harriman, he was Commerce Secretary under President Harry S. Truman, then the 48th Governor of New York. He was the Democratic presidential candidate in 1952 and 1956, and was a central member of a group of alumni of foreign policy known as "The Men of Wisdom." During his time at Groton and Yale, his contacts led to the founding of a banking company and eventually merging with Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. He owns divisions from many other companies including Union Pacific Railroad, Merchant Shipping Corporation and Polaroid Corporation. . During the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harriman served on the National Recovery Administration and on the Business Advisory Council before moving into a foreign policy role.
