John Milton Hay was an American politician and public servant whose career in government spanned more than half a century. Starting as personal secretary and assistant to Abraham Lincoln, Hay was the highest office of the United States Secretary of State under Presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. Or also an author and biographer, he wrote poetry and other literary works throughout his life. Born in Indiana to an anti-slavery family, having moved to Illinois as a child, Hay showed great potential and the family sent him to Brown University. After graduating in 1858, Hay read the law in his uncle's office in Springfield, Illinois, near Lincoln. Ou worked on Lincoln's successful presidential campaign and became one of his private secretaries in the White House. During the American Civil War, Hay stayed close to Lincoln and stood by his side after the President was shot dead at the Ford Theater.
