John Richard Pilger is an Australian journalist, writer and documentary maker. He has lived mainly in England since 1962. Pilger was a staunch critic of American, Australian and British foreign policy, which he said was driven by an agenda of imperialism and realism. Pilger also criticized his country's treatment of Indigenous Australians. For the first time, he drew international attention for his reports on the genocide in Cambodia. His documentary career began with The Quiet Mutiny, taken during a visit to Vietnam, and has continued with over 50 documentaries since. Other works in this form include Five Zero, following the Pol Pot regime in Cambodia, and the Death of a Country: Timorese Conspiracy. Many of his documentaries feature Indigenous Australians, including The Secret Country and Utopia.
