Tom Lantos
Thomas Peter Lantos is an American politician who served as the United States' representative in California from 1981 until his death in 2008. As a Democrat, he represents District of Congress 11 of the state until 1993, then the 12th Congressional Area, both comprising the northern two-thirds of San Mateo County and a portion of the southwestern part of San Francisco after redistribution. Lantos, who chaired the House Foreign Affairs Committee during his final term, in early January 2008, announced that he would not be running for re-election for esophageal cancer. He died before the end of his term. A Hungarian-American, Lantos was the only Holocaust survivor to serve in the US Congress; He survived the genocide with the help of Raoul Wallenberg.
