Lee Patrick Brown is an American politician, criminologist and businessman; in 1997, he was the first African-American elected mayor of Houston, Texas. He was re-elected twice over three terms from 1998 to 2004. He has worked in executive and academic circles; major police departments in Atlanta, Houston and New York for nearly four decades. With practical experience and a doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley, he has combined research and activity throughout his career. After serving as Public Safety Commissioner of Atlanta, Georgia, in 1982 he was appointed the first African-American Sheriff in Houston, Texas, where he implemented public safety techniques to reduce crime minimization.
