Thomas Alan Waits is an American singer, songwriter, musician, songwriter and actor. His lyrics often focus on the downsides of society and are conveyed by his characteristic low, hoarse voice. He worked primarily in jazz music during the 1970s, but his music since the 1980s has reflected even greater influences from blues, rock, variety, and experimental genres. Waits was born and raised in a middle class family in Pomona, California. Inspired by the works of Bob Dylan and Generation Beat, he began singing on San Diego folk music as a teenager. He moved to Los Angeles in 1972, where he worked as a musician before signing a recording contract with Asylum Records. His first albums were Jazz-Directed Closing Hour and Saturday Night's Heart, reflecting his lyrical interest in nightlife, poverty and crime.
